We’ll soon be turning on the lights for this year’s TechPhx!

Hello there! It’s sure been awhile, hasn’t it? Rest assured that even though you haven’t seen much activity online, that does not mean we haven’t been working hard offline as we prepare for TechPhx 2013 this November 16th and 17th!

I’m very excited to be leading the organizing committee again this year, along with co-leader Perri Collins!

We also have a wonderful group of people helping us out with the planning this year. Many of them are veterans to the planning process, but we also have some exciting newcomers that are bringing fresh ideas to the table. Thanks to all of your feedback, we are confident that this will be the best tech unconference yet! Along with all of our new ideas, we are bringing back some of the previously successful ideas from the PodcampAZ years that have fallen to the wayside.

One thing we are extremely excited about is opening up our Pre-Registration! That happens this THURSDAY, May 9, at 8am. This will be your first chance to grab your spot and attend the only UNconference in town! Based on the feedback from our survey after last year’s TechPhx, and much internal discussion of the pros and cons, we have decided that charging a small fee for attendance to TechPhx would improve the quality of the event while minimally impacting attendees. The fee will be $10, plus a $1.24 Eventbrite service charge, per person. Additionally, the base attendance fee will be increasing to $15 on the days of the event, so that is another great reason to pre-register starting Thursday!

We have some amazing sponsors. Page.ly, EventDay, Gangplank Chandler, and of course Phoenix Innovation Foundation. Without these and other sponsors, we wouldn’t have access to so many things needed to run the event. We can’t wait to show you how we will make it even more memorable in the Awesome Category! This event is still all day Saturday and half of the day Sunday- so trust us, registering for TechPhx is an excellent investment. Of course, if you were there last November, you know this already!

It’s a slow burn

We had a meeting today to lay the foundation that we will build on for 2013. Spoke of registration and communication. We got a fun google voice number: 602-88 Tech 0 ; making it both techy and local. We aim to open registration on May 30th, so more information to come at that time.

Great! Head on over to the TechPHX Facebook page, and make a post to let us know how you can help / what you are good at / your suggestion.

You’d be surprised to know how many people show up to every volunteer meeting (4? or is it 5?), but there are probably more than 30 people who perform a task before the conference, or during it, that help it be enjoyable to everyone attending. Imagine if TechPHX was just an online schedule of who was presenting in what room at what time, it could still happen, but it would be lacking in flair and panache.

What’s something to volunteer for?

Tech Support “Day of”: We assign you a room, and in the minutes before the session, you make sure the presenter is good to go with the projector, their slides, etc, and that the video streaming is working; and then you can go view whatever session you would like – it would be good if you are comfortable troubleshooting equipment you’ve never seen before, and worst case scenario, asking the presenter to copy their slides to a usb drive and just using the computer that’s already there if you can’t get their laptop to work.
Live Stream Interviewer “Day of”: Pick out a one or two hour block of time where you “lead the show”, conduct interviews, chat with attendees or those watching online; – it would be good if you are comfortable speaking into a mic for strangers.
Finding Speakers: Speaking at TechPHX is very low pressure, great for a beginner, or even testing out a new presentation.
Finding Sponsors: Feel free to ask your employer, sponsor it yourself, or solicit a business you think would be a good fit.
Volunteer to coordinate volunteer activities

I would even say that anyone who tweets or facebook posts about it, is volunteering in the marketing and promotion, and we thank them for it!
