Hello there techno-geeks! We can’t believe it’s finally here! TechPhx is happening this weekend, November 15-16 at the University of Advancing Technology in Tempe! (MAP) Thank you for registering! If you haven’t registered yet you can still do so, and we also are taking walk-ins. Join us! We are looking forward to an amazing weekend of building our community here in the valley This post serves as your guide to all you need to know in order to plan for an awesome time. This will be a long one, but it is chock-full of important information.
For those who might not know the backstory, TechPhx is formerly PodcampAZ, which began in 2006 as a way to bring the podcasting/video/tech community together. Even before the name change, the vision of Podcamp expanded. Our unique concept allows for experts, users and newbies to present and/or participate in sessions. In our eyes, we are all experts and have something valuable to share. No pitching is allowed and participants understand that much of the learning will be focused on value-added messaging rather than advertisements. Openness and transparency are our hallmarks. Here’s your TechPhx Survival Guide!
Check-In and Schedule
OVERFLOW PARKING: Parking at UAT is limited. Fry’s Electronics is located just east of UAT on the north side. We ask that you park in their side lot or behind the store, and walk over from there. It’s a very short walk, and the weather is amazing right now! Here’s a MAP so you have an idea. DO NOT park at Fry’s FOOD store- they will tow your vehicle. No one wants that.
We have such a wide-range of presenters and sessions this weekend- so check out the schedule and start making plans!
Saturday: Check-In opens at 7:00am, and at 8:15 we will be welcoming all of you in the main theater. Our keynote will begin at 8:30, and sessions will begin at 9:30. Sessions are 40 minutes with 10 minutes in-between to mingle and decide on your next session. Other than the keynotes and podcasting panel, all sessions will be upstairs. Our last sessions end at 3:50, and our closing keynote begins at 4:00 in the theater. We will have a few schedules posted around the session rooms, but we ask that you print out your own schedule or have it on your mobile devices to get around. Less waste is a good thing!
Make plans to join us after the closing Keynote for dinner at Aunt Chilada’s, just a short walk away from UAT. More details below, keep reading!
Sunday: Join us for a true ‘unconference’! You can sign up for a session on the schedule page under the Saturday sessions. You can also see about interest in a session by tweeting #techphx , or request a session by tweeting #techphx . Spontaneity is the nature of the unconference, so let’s see what happens! Worst case, we get some more networking in. Learn more here.
Law of Two Feet
This is YOUR conference, you are completely in control. This is why we use the term un-conference. The weekend is run by the Law of Two Feet. If the session you’re sitting in isn’t quite what you thought, you can get up and go. Are there two sessions at the same time you want to be in? Split it in half. It’s up to you, and you can move from session to session GUILT FREE. We want you to get the most out of TechPhx. We are also streaming sessions live and recording via UStream, so you can catch up on what you missed after the conference.
TechPhx is happy to announce that 2 Fat Guys Grilled Cheese will be with us Saturday for lunch! Meals are $6-$10, and way less hassle than driving and waiting at a restaurant only to rush back for afternoon sessions.
One of our favorite local businesses, BrandX TShirts will also be on hand making your TechPhx shirt right there on-site! BrandX has been one of our sponsors since the Podcamp days, and we appreciate them so very much. Shirts are only $14, and it is sure to be a collector’s item. We also hear they will have some other design goodies available as well! Plan on purchasing your TechPhx shirt during the weekend, but only for a short time. They will be with us from 11:30-2pm! Bonus: buy a shirt and get 2 extra raffle tickets!
You can’t have an event without prizes- and we have plenty to give away! Tickets will be one dollar each. Once you have your raffle tickets, you can then choose which item(s) you want to try and win! A couple of other ways to get raffle tickets: Buying a TechPhx tshirt will get you two tickets, and bringing your own lanyard to the event will get you one. We call it BYOL!
We will also have a donation jar set up at the registration table. One of our past speakers, Krys Van Slyke, is going through a rough time with his family right now. Their 13 month old son has cancer. Read more about the situation here. Let’s help a family out this holiday season!
Other little things to keep in mind! Our Twitter hashtag for the weekend is #TechPhx, We will have a twitter wall set up too. As much as it is fun to have the wall, following along can also help with last minute schedule changes and other important information.
We want photos! The more photos the better! We do have some volunteers helping us out, but that doesn’t mean you can’t contribute! We have a flickr group set up at http://www.flickr.com/groups/2052243@N25/ . We would also love for you to add your photos over on Facebook and of course Twitter with the #techphx tag.
Have a gadget/item/book you won’t use? Think another podcaster, maker, content creator, etc could use it? Bring it to TechPHX on Saturday, we will have a table set up in the common area where you can drop off your tech items and perhaps pick up something as well. Please only bring items you can comfortably carry. More information here.
After Party at Aunt Chilada’s
Immediately after our closing speaker we will have some more raffles and then head over to have dinner at Aunt Chilada’s, which is just a short 5 minute walk from UAT. It’s the perfect way to continue conversations with attendees and speakers who might not have had the chance to talk to you during or between sessions. We hope you will come out and mingle with us! There could be a raffle or two given away there as well!
Almost finished! Thank you for reading this far. We really must thank our sponsors, UAT, Phoenix Innovation Foundation, Page.ly and others. They offer us so much support, and we definitely could not run this show without them. Please check our sponsor page for more information about all of our sponsors and partners!
Much thanks to our speakers too! It takes a lot of work and preparation to put a session together. There is no end to our appreciation of the work and time they are giving to share what they know with you. Be good to them. Applaud loudly. Hug them!
Last, but not least- thank YOU. We also cannot have an event without bodies there. Thank you for registering, and we look forward to meeting and connecting with all of you throughout the weekend!
See you on Saturday!
