Your TechPhx Survival Guide

Why, hello there techno-geeks!

The very first TechPhx unconference is happening this weekend, November 10-11 at the University of Advancing Technology in Tempe! (MAP) We’re looking forward to an amazing weekend of building our community here in the valley! This serves as your guide to all you need to know in order to plan for an awesome time. This will be a long one, but it is chock-full of important information. It will also be the last time you hear from us via email until after the event- we don’t like spam any more than you.

To re-cap, TechPhx is formerly PodcampAZ, which began 6 years ago as a way to bring the podcasting/video/tech community together. Even before the name change, the vision of Podcamp expanded. Our unique concept allows for experts, users and newbies to present and/or participate in sessions. In our eyes, we are all experts and have something valuable to share. No pitching is allowed and participants understand that much of the learning will be focused on value-added messaging rather than advertisements. Openness and transparency are our hallmarks. Here’s your TechPhx Survival Guide!

Meet and Greet Friday Evening
Friday evening we would like to invite you to come out and meet your TechPhx committee, speakers, and other attendees at EVFN. East Valley Friday Nights is a very informal social gathering of folks who come from all over the valley to have a drink, some food, and a whole lot of fun.

On November 9th EVFN is at Draw 10, and we would love for you to join us! RSVP on the Facebook Invite right HERE!

Check-In and Schedule
PARKING: Fry’s Electronics is located just east of UAT on the north side. We ask that you park in their side lot or behind the store, and walk over from there. It’s a very short walk, and the weather is amazing right now! Here’s a MAP so you have an idea. DO NOT park at Fry’s FOOD store- they will tow your vehicle. No one wants that.

We have such a wide-range of presenters and sessions this weekend- so check out the schedule and start making plans!

http://techphx.com/schedule/

Check-In opens at 8:00am, and at 8:30 we will be welcoming all of you in the main theater. The first sessions begin at 9:00, and are 45 minutes with 15 minutes in-between to mingle and decide on your next session. Other than the theater and the Podcast, all sessions will be upstairs. Sessions end at 3:45 on Saturday, and 11:45 on Sunday. We will have a few schedules posted around the session rooms, but we ask that you print out your own schedule or have it on your mobile devices to get around. Less waste is a good thing!

TechPhx Live Podcast!
This year we are excited to announce once again the dynamic duo of CJ and Scott will be joining us with a never-ending live podcast stream! They have been with us every year since PodcampAZ, and we absolutely adore them. They will be interviewing speakers, attendees, and giving you their play-by-play of all the awesome things happening around them. They are a great hosting team, and we are lucky and proud to have them with us. The podcast stream is located on the first floor behind the theater- you can’t miss them so stop by and say hello! If you would like to listen in on the podcast, you can do so at http://www.justin.tv/techphx.

Law of Two Feet
This is YOUR conference, you are completely in control. This is why we use the term un-conference. The weekend is run by the Law of Two Feet. If the session you’re sitting in isn’t quite what you thought, you can get up and go. Are there two sessions at the same time you want to be in? Split it in half. It’s up to you, and you can move from session to session GUILT FREE. We want you to get the most out of TechPhx.

Open Panels
On the schedule you will see open panels for podcasting, writing, and video. These are a chance to exchange ideas and discuss what you know about each topic. If you are looking for how to get started, how to continue, or any other technical ideas, join the discussion and collaborate with others!

Lunch!
TechPhx is happy to announce that The BuzzNBeez Good Food truck will be with us Saturday for lunch! They serve freshly made, gourmet food from around the world to guests on the go. The Chef is always creating new and exciting dishes to share. With an array of unique ingredients, you are sure to have the perfect combination for your meal.  They will have a vegetarian meal on the menu too! Meals are $6-$8, and way less hassle than driving and waiting at a restaurant only to rush back for afternoon sessions. Take a look at their website and start planning your lunch now!

TechPhx TShirts
One of our favorite local businesses, BrandX TShirts will also be on hand making your 1st ever TechPhx shirt right there on-site! BrandX has been one of our sponsors since the Podcamp days, and we appreciate them so very much. Shirts are only $14, and it is sure to be a collector’s item. We also hear they will have some other design goodies available as well! Plan on purchasing your TechPhx shirt during the weekend!

Raffles/Food Drive
You can’t have an event without prizes- and we have plenty to give away! Phoenix Suns tickets, Torch Theater Tickets, tablets and other geeky and non-geeky items- you will have many chances to win! Since it is also close to the holidays, TechPhx is using the raffles to hold a canned food drive for United Food Bank. Each food item you donate is worth one raffle ticket, with a limit of 10 tickets. You then choose which item(s) you want to try and win! Although the limit is 10 tickets, the amount of food you can donate has no limit. You can also bring more canned goods on Sunday for more tickets. A list of what is needed can be found HERE. Thank you for helping the United Food Bank help those who need a little more assistance this time of year.

Miscellaneous Tidbits
Other little things to keep in mind! Our Twitter hashtag for the weekend is #TechPhx, We will have a twitter wall located by the Podcast station behind the theater on the first floor. As much as it is fun to have the wall, following along can also help with last minute schedule changes and when we do random raffle prizes during the weekend!

We want photos! The more photos the better! We do have some volunteers helping us out, but that doesn’t mean you can’t contribute! We have a flickr group set up at http://www.flickr.com/groups/2052243@N25/ . We would also love for you to add your photos over on Facebook and of course Twitter with the #techphx tag.

If you have a recording device- bring it! Audio, video… we would love to have sessions recorded!

After Party at Chino Bandido
Back by popular demand, our after party on Saturday will be at Chino Bandido in Chandler!  It’s the perfect way to continue conversations with attendees and speakers who might not have had the chance to talk to you during or between sessions. We hope you will come out and mingle with us! The fun starts at 5pm, giving you plenty of time to find a ride and get to Chandler after the closing raffles! RSVP here! Here is also a Google Map to get from UAT to Chinos.

Almost finished! Thank you for reading this far.  We really must thank our sponsors. They offer us so much support, and we definitely could not run this show without them. Especially UAT. For the last 6 years they have generously opened their campus to us, and we could not have this awesome weekend without them. Please check our sponsor page for more information about all of our sponsors and partners.

Much thanks to our speakers too! It takes a lot of work and preparation to put a session together. There is no end to our appreciation of the work and time they are giving to share what they know with you. Be good to them. Applaud loudly. Hug them!

Last, but not least- thank YOU. We also cannot have an event without bodies there. Thank you for registering, and we look forward to meeting and connecting with all of you throughout the weekend!

See you on Saturday!
